POSITION SUMMARY

The Lighting & Sound Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the lighting, sound, & projection design and implementation for all productions, programs, and events ensuring that all needs are met with high standards of quality and creativity. This role requires a blend of technical expertise, artistic vision, and strong leadership skills to guide a team of IATSE technicians and collaborate effectively with other departments.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION 

  • Work closely with directors, designers, and other stakeholders to understand production requirements and vision.
  • As directed, either design or directly support the work of the lighting or sound designer by assisting during the tech process.
  • Procure appropriate lighting, sound or projection equipment and materials, ensuring they meet project specifications and budget constraints.

TEAM LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT

  • Supervise and mentor the Head Electrician, Studio Electrician, Mainstage Sound Engineer, Studio Sound Engineer as well as Overhire Technicians.
  • Assign tasks, provide training, and evaluate team performance.
  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols and best practices.

TECHNICAL OVERSIGHT

  • Oversee the setup, operation, and maintenance of lighting and AV equipment.
  • Collaborate to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues during setup and execution.
  • Ensure that designs are implemented accurately and efficiently.

COLLABORATION AND COMMUNICATION

  • Coordinate with other departments (e.g.,Scenic, Props, Costumes) to ensure seamless integration with other production elements.
  • Communicate effectively with the Director of Production to provide updates and address concerns.

BUDGET MANAGEMENT

  • Budget for equipment and labor costs for each department and collaborate with the DOP on their overall financial health and viability.
  • Track expenses and ensure projects stay within budget constraints.

INNOVATION AND IMPROVEMENT

  • Stay current with industry trends and technological advancements in lighting, sound, and projections.
  • Propose and implement improvements to enhance designs and production processes.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in Lighting or Sound Design, Technical Theatre, or a related field preferred.

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in theatrical design and supervision.
  • Proven experience in leading a team and managing lighting, sound, and projections for various types of projects.
  • Experience working with and managing IATSE members.

SKILLS

  • Strong understanding of lighting and sound design principles and techniques.
  • Proficiency with lighting,sound, and projection control systems and software.
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Effective leadership and team management abilities.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

CERTIFICATIONS

  • Relevant certifications (e.g., OSHA, electrical safety, Dante) may be required or preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, depending on project needs.
  • Will require lifting and carrying heavy equipment.
