Theatre Usher Application


The Repertory Theatre is seeking experienced customer service representatives for our Theatre Usher position for the 2021-2022 season operating from two St. Louis theatre’s: the Loretto-Hilton Center on Webster University campus and the Center Of Creative Arts (COCA) in University City. The Theatre Usher position is a seasonal, part-time position occurring on evenings, weekends and occasional weekday matinees. Shift lengths last four-five hours on average and Ushers are tasked to assist a welcoming and safe, patron experience. The Rep is seeking applicants who are able to commit to a semi-consistent schedule of no less than 2 shifts up to 5+ shifts per week at both theatre locations. The Theatre Usher position includes several roles: Office Assistant, Ticket Scanner, Seating/Program Distribution, and others. This support includes:

  • Offering an inclusive, accessible and welcoming customer service experience to each and every patron.
  • Scanning, tearing, and/or collecting ticket stubs, and instructing patrons in accessing the digital programs or other materials for each performance.
  • Assisting patrons requiring accommodations.
  • Maintaining the safety and cleanliness of the theater, theater lobby, and other patron areas before, during and after each performance.
  • Other duties as assigned by House Manager.


RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to:

  • Greeting patrons with enthusiasm and professionalism. 
  • Ensuring that everyone entering a performance presents a valid ticket.
  • Providing appropriate information to patrons regarding venue and performance.
  • Knowing the seating layout and patron facilities of the venues.
  • Following basic emergency-safety procedures for the venues.
  • Reporting issues/emergencies to the House Manager as necessary and appropriate.
  • Being responsible for opening and closing the audience doors at the appropriate times.
  • Responding willingly to other duties as assigned.



  • Demonstrates the ability to follow directions and work as a team member.
  • Demonstrates skillful verbal communication skills, exhibiting a patient, welcoming, courteous, helpful, inclusive and diversity aware demeanor at all times.
  • Must be well-groomed.
  • Must employ skillful critical thinking and ethical reasoning skills with stress-management (in handling emergencies or other instances which arise in the performance venues).
  • Must be discreet and tactful in responding to patron needs.
  • Ages 18+ with reliable transportation



  • Mobility to navigate stairs, ramps, between seats, within crowds and maintain a stationary position for hours at a time.
  • Mobility to navigate all of the above in low lighting or no-lighting conditions.
  • Mobility to assist patrons with accessibility needs and emergency procedures.

Thursday 6:30 to 11:30pm
Friday 6:30 to 11:30pm
Saturday 12:30 to 5:30pm; 2:30 to 7:30pm; 6:30 to 11:30pm
Sunday 12:30 to 5:30pm; 5:30 to 10:30pm

*Theatre Ushers are REQUIRED to attend a paid, 1-hour training session prior to their first scheduled shift.


The Rep is requiring every Theatre Usher to have received full COVID vaccination by their first shift (or can provide medical or sincerely held religious exemption). All persons, staff and patrons alike, are required to wear a COVID-safe mask for the entire duration of their shift.
