The Story

Alma, a dark-skinned African-American woman, and Eugene, a light-skinned African-American man, have been lifelong friends—yet when their friendship turns to love, the different colors of their skin raise obstacles that may prove insurmountable. A finalist for the 2002 Pulitzer Prize, and a fiery, poetic look at the harsh realities of internal racism in this modern-day South Carolina Romeo and Juliet.
